SATIRE | INHERITANCE

1.      Inheriting a top seat without merit only invites ridicule from subjects.

Introduction:
In the Inheritance, Mulwa exposes the vices in Kutula colony by Lacuna and his government in a rather exaggerated manner as discussed below. King Lacuna abuses power and takes advantages of his position to exploit and oppress his subjects. He orders the killing of anyone who opposes his leadership. He asked Juda Zen Melo to kill his brother Bengo who is an activist and a threat to his leadership. When he refuses, he faces the consequences by being sacked and evicted from the government house and his car is taken away. He is also forced to sell his farm to Lacuna’s  Cronies for peanuts and the wife is forced to work in the same farm to make ends meet.

Window seat Benjamin Branoff | Memories we Lost

Discuss the major issues highlighted by the writer in the story window seat by Benjamin Branoff.
 Introduction
Every writer sets out to pass a certain message or communicate a particular issue to the audience through their work. Benjamin highlights a few concepts in the story “window seat”

1.      Lawlessness on our roads, vehicles should always follow traffic rules on the roads for safety in this story law and order on roads is not followed as it should be. e.g public transport vehicles are overloaded. The narrator says a min-van meant for ten passengers now carry twenty four of them. It is even worse in the rush hour.

Pretenders are worse than murderers | The Inheritance

“Pretenders are worse than murderers.” Write an easy to show the truthfulness of this statement basing your answer on the inheritance by David Mulwa.

Most people in any society may pretend that everything is alright, yet they do know that something is wrong.this is what David Mulwa demonstrates in his play The Inheritance.

Lacuna pretends to honour King Kutula xv during his commemoration. He says ‘let’s always remember with gratitude what my father the king did for us. On your behalf I shall now walk to the Royal grave to pay our continued National respects.’ Yet he was the one who killed the King in order to pave way for his leadership.

Lies and Deceit | A Doll's House

Using illustrations from the ‘A Doll’s House’  by Henrik Ibsen, Show how lies and deceit are exposed in the play

Whenever people find themselves in a difficult situation, they use lies to cover up for their actions. This is clearly potrayed by Henrik Ibsen in his play ‘A Doll’s House’.

As the play begins, Nora behaves like an obedient and honest wife. However,  this is not her real character. She does not want to reveal to her husband that she had loaned money from Krogstamnd to facilitate their trip to Italy.

Women are generally loving and self- sacrificing| A Doll's House

Women are generally loving and self- sacrificing. Validate this statement basing your illustrations on the play ‘A Doll’s House’ by Henrik Ibsen

In today’s society, a person who claims to love you or really concerned about you would go to any level to show how much they care. Nora and Mrs. Linde clearly bring out this in the plays, A Doll’s House.

Nora, proves her true love and concern when she risks by forging her father’s signature in order to acquire money for the sake of her husband’s health. She goes against societal expectations and provides financial support to Helmer when he fell ill and takes him to Italy to recover. This clearly portrays her love towards her husband.

The past always catches up with the present| A Doll's House

The past always catches up with the present, sometimes with some unintended consequences.

The choices that we made in the past have consequences that show up in our present lives, sometimes, influencing it negatively.

Nora Helmer made a choice in her first year of marriage that later leads to the breakdown of something for which she had worked so hard and persevered a lot of humiliation to preserve. It was a choice she had made out of her great love for her husband. Torvald Helmer was seriously sick because of overwork and the doctors had recommended that he takes a holiday in the warmer climates in Italy. Nora tried giving hints to make him get a loan for the trip and eventually told him to get it, but he would hear none of it. In this society, only men could get loans with minimal obstacles. Nora takes a loan of 250 pounds to save her husband. The loan is given by Krogstad who gives almost 'impossible conditions' and Nora has to forge not only her father's name but also his signature. Three days after the loan was extended, her father dies.

Levels of Conflict - Blossoms of the Savannah

Discuss the various levels of conflict in the novel using illustrations from Blossoms of the Savannah for illustrations
Cultural conflict – Maa culture is well defined. The culture has advocated for FGM. The society valued FGM and those that had not undergone the right were referred to Intoye Nemengalana, a derogatory term. They were in conflict with the society. Emakererei a known crusader against girl circumcision was forcefully ejected from Ole Supeiyos homestead threatening to clobber her. She was referred to as a wasp, a great threat to Maa culture (p22). Female circumcision he said was not only an honored rite of passage that had been in existence from time immemorial but an important practice that tamed an otherwise wild gender.

Wealth and money cannot afford happiness. With illustrations from John Steinbeck’s The Pearl, validate this statement.

Introduction
Wealth and money cannot guarantee happiness. One may be rich but that does not mean he is happy. Juana and Kino have the pearl that if sold will earn them a lot of money thus liberating them from poverty. The Pearl in this case signifies wealth. This new found treasure however robs them of the happiness they had when they were poor.

Nora:            In what way?  You shall have your money soon.

Negative Cultural Practices in Blossoms of the Savannah

FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION.
Joseph Parmuat narrated to Resian and Taiyo how the practice was started by women to resist the evil Ilarinkoi, Taiyo and Resian are determined to fight it. Resian is very much against this retrogressive practice. She says, “I would rather live in the noisiest place on earth, than live anywhere near a vagabond who would accost me…with the intention of mutilating my sexuality”.  She later on manages to escape the brutal practice however her Sister Taiyo barely makes it having been forcibly cut. F.G.M is so highly regarded in Nasila that no girl would get married before getting circumcised.
