Many African Governments Are Dysfunctional Parliament of Owls by Adipo Sidang

Many African Governments Are Dysfunctional and End Up Mistreating Their Citizens. Using Appropriate Examples from Parliament of Owls by Adipo Sidang, Write an Essay to Illustrate This Statement.

A government is expected to protect its citizens and provide good leadership. However, some governments fail to perform their duties and instead oppress the people they are supposed to serve. In Adipo Sidang’s play Parliament of Owls, the Royal Owl’s government uses oppressive laws, corruption, intimidation and violence to maintain power. This is illustrated in the following ways.

First, the Royal Owl’s government mistreats its citizens by passing oppressive laws. The leaders introduce the Moonlight Bill, which restricts birds from being outside after 6:00 p.m. This law affects birds that hunt at night and those that sing in the moonlight. The government also introduces a moonlight tax, claiming that the money will be used to supervise birds and protect the kingdom. However, the law mainly serves the selfish interests of the Owls. When Osogo protests against the Moonlight Bill by playing his flute, a curfew is imposed to force all birds to sleep at sunset. This shows how the government uses laws to deny citizens their freedom.

Evil People Eventually Face the Consequences of Their Misdeeds in The Samaritan by John Lara

Wrongdoers may hide their crimes for some time, but eventually the truth comes out and they face the consequences of their actions. In The Samaritan by John Lara, Mayor Mossi tries to hide his corrupt activities and protect his position. However, his efforts fail as his evil deeds are exposed.

First, Mayor Mossi tries to hide his corruption during the launch of the Samaritan App. The app is a winning innovation by students of Sagrada Secondary School. During the launch, the students perform a skit that exposes corruption in the municipal procurement process. Mossi becomes uncomfortable because he fears that his corrupt activities will be revealed. He refuses to launch the app and orders Nicole and Principal Narine to stop all activities related to it. He also directs Nicole to write a letter expressing reservations about the app. Despite his efforts, the truth about corruption in the municipality continues to emerge.

Intimidation and Blackmail in The Samaritan by John Lara

Intimidation and Blackmail in The Samaritan by John Lara

In the play The Samaritan by John Lara, intimidation and blackmail are used by various leaders to protect their positions, hide their corrupt activities and silence those who threaten their interests. The leaders of the Municipal Council resort to threats, false accusations, manipulation and the misuse of power to achieve their selfish ambitions. This is evident through the actions of Mayor Mossi, Hon. Seymour, Hon. Ted, Hon. Basdeo, Inspector Bembe and Narine, among others.

Firstly, Mayor Mossi intimidates Nicole into deleting posts that portray him negatively on The Samaritan. When he realizes that he cannot control the mobile application, he threatens Nicole and demands that she delete all the damaging posts about him. He also orders her to call him and confirm that she has started deleting them. He warns her of dire consequences if she fails to obey his orders (p. 73). This shows how leaders use threats to silence those who expose their wrongdoings.

Poor Governance and Failed Leadership in Fathers of Nations

Poor governance and failed leadership are major causes of suffering in many African societies. When leaders neglect their responsibilities, misuse public resources and suppress those who demand justice, ordinary citizens bear the consequences. In Fathers of Nations by Paul B. Vita, Professor Kimani's experiences demonstrate how poor leadership and corrupt institutions can destroy the lives, families and careers of innocent citizens.

First, poor infrastructure and negligence by leaders can result in the loss of innocent lives. Professor Kimani loses his only daughter, Tuni, in a tragic road accident. The accident is linked to the poor state of the country's roads and the failure of the authorities to provide adequate public infrastructure and safety. Instead of ensuring that citizens have safe and reliable roads, those in leadership neglect their responsibilities. Tuni's death therefore demonstrates how ordinary citizens suffer when governments fail to provide essential services and maintain public infrastructure.

Osogo as a Courageous Fighter for Justice in Parliament of Owls

“Justice can only be achieved when the oppressed are determined to expose the ills from their

leaders.” Closely referring to Osogo in Parliament of Owls, write an essay to justify this

statement.

Osogo as a Courageous Fighter for Justice in Parliament of Owls

For people to achieve fairness, justice and liberation in society, they need individuals who possess courage, determination and the willingness to challenge oppression. In Parliament of Owls by Adipo Sidang, Osogo emerges as a brave bird who refuses to remain silent when his fellow birds are mistreated. He openly challenges the Royal Owls, exposes their oppressive practices and supports efforts to overthrow their unjust rule. Through his actions, Osogo becomes an important symbol of resistance and the struggle for justice.

First, Osogo courageously condemns the assassination and killing of innocent birds by the Royal Owls. The Royal Owls use violence to silence those who oppose their leadership. In an attempt to eliminate Osogo, thirty-three weaverbirds are massacred. Instead of being intimidated by these killings, Osogo openly criticises the leaders for allowing such brutality to continue. He challenges Red String and accuses the Parliament of Owls of doing nothing to stop the killings. He further reminds Moneybag that he has caused the deaths of his own people and warns him that he will eventually be held accountable for his actions. Osogo's willingness to speak against political killings demonstrates his bravery and commitment to justice.

When We Carry Ourselves with Dignity, We Earn Respect from Those Around Us

When we carry ourselves with dignity, we earn respect from those around us. Drawing specific illustrations from pather’s story, ‘Ninema’, write an essay to show the truth of this statement.

When We Carry Ourselves with Dignity, We Earn Respect from Those Around Us

First, Ninema understands her position in society and accepts her circumstances with dignity. She works hard selling fresh produce at the Indian market and faces the challenges of her life without complaining excessively. Although she punctuates her work with sighs, she does not allow her circumstances to destroy her self-respect. She accepts her lot but is not resigned to it. Her ability to face life courageously and perform her duties earns her respect from those around her.

Oppression in the play ‘Parliament of Owls’.

Discuss how Adipo Sidang’ has addressed oppression in the play ‘Parliament of Owls’.

First, Sidang’ portrays oppression through the introduction of the Moonlight Bill. Money Bags sponsors a law that restricts day birds from twittering and flying from tree to tree after 6:00 p.m. This law interferes with the birds’ freedom and normal way of life. The day birds can no longer sing to their young ones at night. They are also required to register their eggs with Olik Tiga, which provides the Owls with an opportunity to steal them. Through this law, the playwright demonstrates how oppressive leaders can use legislation to deprive citizens of their basic freedoms while pretending to protect society.
