Drawing illustrations from the play Betrayal in the City, Write an essay on the evils that exist
in the society.
Evils
are very bad habits or cruel behavior displayed by human beings. The society of
Kafira in this play is dominated by evils such as moral decadence, corruption, and
Oppression of the poor. It is a perfect representation of any society that we
live in.
The
Kafiran society suffers moral decadence. Mulili, a soldier and Boss’s cousin
(Head of State) is disrespectful to the old people, Doga and Nina. He calls
them stubborn old men’s and is not moved by Nina’s threat to make him blind by
stripping. Mulili claims that he has seen many naked people and nothing has
happened to him. Boss, the head of state is a womanizer and attempts to rape
Regina when she goes to see him over the release of her brother, Mosese, who is
imprisoned. To make matters worse Boss puts his wife to jail when she complains
about the evil.
Mulili,
who is a soldier, misuses power by oppressing others, for instance when he
falls out with Kabito about the Milk Tender, he reports Kabito to the Boss, who
orders Kabito’s execution. Jere fires at him when they are sent to prevent Doga
and Nina from performing the shaving ceremony to their deceased son, Adika. He
(Jere) is jailed for sympathizing with Doga and Nina by suggesting they allow
them to go on with the ceremony. Askari also abuses power by mistreating
prisoners. He boasts that he had once killed a prisoner in the cells.
There
is inefficiency in government. Boss rules by elevating close relatives to power
and then uses them as spies. Mulili is one of them and he in turn acquires a
big farm and grade cows. Tumbo is equally inefficient and corrupt for he
pronounces Jusper the winner of a writing competition which never
was. Another instance of Government inefficiency is during the dress –rehearsal
of the play, real guns are used as props. This leads to the palace coup, which
sees the government of Boss being overthrown.
Mulili,
Boss and Tumbo are representatives of the governing party that exercises cruel
and unfair treatment of people by denying them freedom through suppression.
Doga and Nina are denied the right and freedom of performing a shaving ceremony
for their murdered son, Adika. They are later murdered in cold blood. Jere
another victim is imprisoned for expressing his contentment with Mulili.
In
conclusion, the government and citizens should always act with a sense of
responsibility, Integrity and transparency to prevent such evils from creeping
in the society and destroying it.
