Justice
though elusive is achieved in the Caucasian Chalk Circle.
Injustice
is prevalent in the society many times; people suffer because of injustice for
instance widows are disinherited by their in-laws. However justice is
eventually achieved, for example through court rulings in the Caucasian Chalk
Circle, there are several instances of injustice, but justice is eventually
achieved
Natella’s
act of abandoning Michael as she is more interested in her clothes and shoes
before she flees is an act of injustice. As a mother she should have ensured
Michael’s safety but instead flees and leaves him behind him in great danger.
Grusha’s humane act saves him and Natella claiming custody of Micheal is
unfair. However, Azdak upholds justice by giving Grusha custody of Michael.
Grusha
being forced to marry Jussup by her brother and sister-in-law is an act of
injustice. She greatly loves Simon but because her brother’s wife is religious,
she gets married to Jussup to uphold their reputation.Justice is achieved when
Azdak divorces her making her free to marry Simon Shashava whom he loved.
The
governor had been unjust by not listening to the peoples petitions. On his way
to church there were many beggars and petitioners trying to get his attention
but he simply ignored them as a soldier pushed the crowd back lashing at them
with thick leather whips. This injustice leads him to be beheaded when there is
a revolution and in a way, justice is achieved by his death. He pays for what
he has been doing to the people.
Azdak’s
appointment as a judge is a form of justice after a long period of injustice by
the other judges. Azdak was sympathetic to the poor and was known as “The poor
man’s magistrate” (Brecht 79). He broke rules to save the poor and was bribed
by ‘empty hands’. He dispensed justice in his fashion for instance the widow
accused of stealing a cow which was given by “Saint Banditus” is let off and
given wine to drink. Her son had been killed in the war so judge Azdak does a
form of compensation. The Cook tells Grusha that Azdak may give her a chance
unlike other judges whom she’d have as much chance as a chicken has teeth (Brecht
87). Azdak period of judging is described by the singers as “Almost an age of
justice”
Giving
of the valley to the collective fruit farmers and not the original owner the
collective goat farmers was an act of justice. The goat farmers wanted the
valley back yet they had fled from it during the war. The fruit farmers had
fought for it and had made development plans that would even include the goat
farmers. The goat farmers only wanted it because it was theirs originally and
where they had relocated to, they claim goats did not like the grass and it did
not smell morning in the morning “These were flimsy reasons”, hence it was fair
to give the valley to the fruit farmers
Conclusion
Though injustice is seen in many ways in the
play/text justice is eventually achieved as shown in this essay. We must strive
to uphold justice in society for peaceful coexistence as seen in the Caucasian
Chalk Circle.
